A SportsEngine alternative for small leagues and parishes
By mysports.io · Updated October 26, 2026
SportsEngine HQ is built for large organizations and priced like it: $804 a year plus 3.25% + $1.50 on every card payment, and a setup that reviewers describe as a significant investment for a small league. A parish program or a 150-family rec league usually needs a fraction of it. Here's the honest comparison.
What SportsEngine costs
HQ is $67 a month billed annually ($804), with "preferred" processing at 3.25% + $1.50 per transaction. On a 150-family club doing 400 registrations a year, that's about $2,600 a year if the club absorbs the processing, or $804 from the club and $1,800 from families if it's passed on. Reviewers on comparison sites note it "could be a bit cheaper, like 3% + $1 like competitors" and describe a sizeable initial outlay for configuration.
SportsEngine is also the subject of a class action (Morales v. SportsEngine) alleging that its processing fee appeared only as a line item at checkout, after a family had decided to register.
What you get for it
A lot, genuinely: league websites, scheduling, team management, a parent app, background-check integration, governing-body connections, and configuration for organizations with dozens of divisions. It's the right tool for a city-wide league or a club with paid staff. It's built by NBC Sports Next, which is the kind of owner a 3,000-player organization wants and a parish athletic director doesn't need.
What a small league actually uses
When we rebuilt mysports.io we looked at nine years of real use by small programs. Of six advertised modules, families and admins used registration and payments. Scheduling had three records in nine years. Rosters outside registration had none. Messaging was never built. That pattern shows up in reviews of every big platform: small organizations pay for a suite and use a corner of it.

Making the call
Ask two questions. Does your organization have paid staff and more than a few hundred families? Then SportsEngine's suite may earn its price. Is it a volunteer board running five seasons a year for the same families? Then you're buying a stadium to host a picnic. Registration and money are the job; the rest is a feature list.
